VOLUNTEERS!

BRING GOCUP FOR FREE COFFEE, BRING EGG CARTONS FOR MANDALA

Bow River Flow
in brief…

We’re looking for volunteers for a fun new summer event.  Can you help?

WHEN:                            Sunday August 23rd

Setup: 7-10am (everyone should be set up and ready for the public by 10)
Event: 10am-4pm
Strike: 4-6pm

WHO:              The organizing committee is made up entirely of volunteers who have an interest in the event, and in making Calgary a people- and people-powered transportation friendly city. The non-profit Arusha Society has agreed to help coordinate the event and sign off on things like permits that require non-profit status.  The City has been very supportive (Roads, Recreation, Parks, administration and Council).

WHAT:              The Bow River Flow is Calgary’s answer to similar events that have blossomed in cities all over the world – Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Bogota and more – in which streets are closed to traffic and opened to human-powered modes of transport, with fun things to do along the route. It is part of a world-wide renaissance of cities built for people.

In its first year, the Bow River flow will take place in the community of Hillhurst-Sunnyside. In future years, we envision communities all along the riverfront co-hosting the event. So join us on August 23rd. Bring your family, your neighbours, your grandparents, your pets (there’s a dog parade at noon), your bicycles, your tricycles, your in-line skates, your wheelchairs, your scooters, your yoga mats, your picnic baskets. Join the Flow - roll, float and stroll.

Memorial Drive is getting to be quite lovely along this stretch, with new medians that will keep the public away from the traffic in the westbound lanes. The inside lane (of the 2 eastbound lanes) will be the “mobile” lane for bikers and skaters etc, and the curb lane will be a stationary lane, with chalk art and other fun things to do.  There’ll be buskers and other musicians, nature walks and talks, historical talks and tours, didgeridoo-making, bike workshops, parades, a kids’ zone and lots more throughout the day.  This is a casual event, not a festival, and there are hopes that it might eventually happen every Sunday (see the website for what happens in other cities).

The Ride the Road bicycle event, organized by the Calgary Tour de Nuit Society will be a concurrent event on August 23, 2009.  Cyclists will ride through the Bow River Flow event along Memorial (slowly of course!). Kids zone – help with games, chalk art, bubbles etc. (10-4)
Dog Parade:  help coordinate the start of the parade

Set-up: 7-10am
Event: 10-1 and 1-4
Strike: 4-6
Security shifts: 9-1 and 1-5
Volunteer recognition and attire:  we’re on a skimpy budget, so we’ll have snacks and water for you, but it’ll likely be something like a bandana or nametag rather than t-shirts for people to identify you as a volunteer.  And there’ll be lots of hugs and BIG thankyous to go around…
Gathering place:  the INFO/LOST KIDS TENT unless I let you know otherwise
I believe the event will go rain or shine, so let us know if you’ll still be able to come if it’s raining.

Thanks for agreeing to do this (or agreeing to consider doing this).  I think it will be a fun day, and could become a great Calgary tradition.

Call or email me if you have questions.
